Thank you to the League of Women Voters and Oregon Coast Community College for helping candidates and voters connect. Watch the forum and hear directly from the candidates.
The League has a long history of encouraging informed civic participation, and the college’s commitment to education makes it a fitting partner in that work. As your current county commissioner, I believe informed choices are essential to good government.
Each of us can ask questions, weigh the evidence, consider different perspectives, and distinguish verified facts from unsupported claims. Civics literacy matters. When we educate ourselves and support access to education for everyone, we strengthen our community and our ability to choose the people who serve us. I encourage you to watch the forum and hear directly from the candidates.
Elders Climate Action Oregon Chapter – Commissioner Candidate Meeting – 5.14.26
Elders Action Network broadly represents a growing movement of older Americans working to address the environmental, social, and governance challenges of our time.
Elders Climate Action Oregon Chapter is a synthesis of the Elders Acton Network in our coastal communities to have discussions and share information with each other regarding climate and environmental topics.
At the Oregon Chapter 5.14.26 meeting candidates were asked to give a brief 10-minute presentation outlining their views on climate and environmental issues and to explain how their knowledge, experience, and values would guide their decisions on these issues as an elected county commissioner.
Elders organizers expressed interest in hearing each candidate’s personal story, priorities, and commitment to protecting the planet for current and future generations — a legacy Elders hope to leave for younger generations.
Casey Miller, Cristen Don, Marci Baker, and Walter Chuck presented.
Elders mission recognizes that elders carry decades of experience, wisdom, and perspective that can help communities navigate increasingly complex challenges including climate change, democratic participation, economic justice, and sustainable living.
We appreciate Mike Allen, founder and co-leader of the Oregon Chapter, along with Martin Desmond and Tom Kerns, for creating this opportunity!

Elders Action Network (EAN) including its projects, Elders Climate Action (ECA) and Elders for Sound Democracy (ESD) are nonprofit and nonpartisan, elder-centered and volunteer driven working to engage older generations to advocate for policies and practices that protect our air and water, our democracy, our economy, our communities and our health—now and for generations to come.
Some photos and reflections from Saturday…
Libraries are essential community infrastructure. Decades of local vision and volunteer energy have brought this new asset to Yachats, and it is fantastic! Pleasure to see State Librarian Wendy Cornelisen, Mayor Craig Berdie, MC David Rivinus and many others who gathered to check it out.

From there, I headed to the Yachats Commons for the District Attorney’s Town Hall. Appreciate your willingness to engage in open dialogue. Lots of questions — and that’s a good thing. DA Wallace’s presentation outlined how her team is structured and how that translates into public-safety capacity. A shared understanding of how our government systems work helps us all.
I wrapped up the day in Newport at the University of Oregon School of Journalism listening session. If you haven’t already, please take a few minutes to review the Civic Information Index – https://civicinfoindex.org/

With so much information coming at us each day, filtering out the noise can be a challenge. When local journalism strengthens community connection and supports civic engagement, our communities are better equipped to discern thoughtfully.
Thank you for showing up, sharing perspectives, and engaging in intellectually honest conversations. Follow up research will be forthcoming at – https://agorajournalism.center/research/
